What You Need to Know About Getting Dental Implants

If you have a broken tooth or one of your adult teeth has fallen out, your dentist may recommend dental implants. In this video, a periodontist (gum doctor) discusses the process of replacing teeth with implants. These devices are used to replace those broken or lost. If an adult tooth comes out, you should keep the tooth and give it to the dentist.

What are the Parts of a Dental Implant?

A dental implant has three separate parts. The first part is the implant, which is a titanium screw which is implanted through a patient’s gum and into their jawbone. Another titanium device (called an abutment) is attached on top of the implant. To complete the implant, a crown (which looks like a tooth) is securely attached to the abutment.

What Happens During a Dental Implant Procedure?

During a dental implant procedure, the dentist ensures all traces of the old tooth are gone before placing an implant. In most cases, a dental crown can’t be placed on top of the implant on the same day the implant procedure is begun. The dentist must be sure the jawbone has healed before the implant is inserted, which can take up to six months. Replacing teeth with implants will require special care, including flossing and cleaning, which your dentist can explain.
